Ray Turner, Ph.D Roxbury Community College E-mail: commander@alum.poly.edu Web site(s): http://home.att.net/~turnerz/homepage.html http://rcc.mass.edu I have been involved in science education reform for more than 10 years. As CIO, I led the way for the creation of a technology hub at RCC. The "Techno-hub" will link over 20 community, HUD, and k-12 sites to RCC, the instructional technology provider. I am focused on developing cost effective, culturally relevant, science projects attractive to minority students. The projects must be flexible enough to allow a variety of members at different levels of participation to collaborate on a single project while off-site. A focus on environmental science may be attractive to minority students. It also lends itself to a myriad of experimental protocols involving a "hands-on" component and a component for electronically transferable data and knowledge. This creation of virtual lab bench space could be the high-tech magic bullet required to attract more non-traditional students to science and engineering.
