He also serves as Study Director for the NRC's Committee on Undergraduate Science Education and the Board on Engineering Education and oversaw the preparation and publication of the recent NRC report, "Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology." Labov also was co-director of a NRC study for the NSF that examined the feasibility and logistics of developing a digital national library for undergraduate SME&T education. Prior to his appointment at the NRC in 1997, Labov spent 18 years as a member of the Department of Biology and Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences at Colby College in Maine.
